We prepare the program in cooperation with a forest pedagogy worker and we can adapt its content to the age, size and focus of a particular group.
What is Summer with Squirrels?
Summer with Squirrels was created as a series of activities intended primarily for families with children. We have gradually expanded the program so that it can also be prepared for organized groups, school groups, children’s and school camps or as an unconventional part of corporate teambuilding. The basic idea is to get to know nature directly where we can see it, touch it and observe it – instead of a classic lecture, participants will therefore be offered an experiential form of forest pedagogy with practical tasks, demonstrations, games and discussion.
Getting to know mountain fauna and flora
Martinské hole is located in the surroundings of Lúčanská Mala Fatra and offers ideal conditions for getting to know mountain nature. We can focus on, for example:
- animals living in Malá and Veľká Fatra
- recognizing their tracks and other signs of residence
- trees and plants of the mountain environment
- the functioning of the forest and its importance
- the relationship between humans, animals and nature
- nature protection and proper behavior in the forest
The content of the program may change depending on the season, weather, age of the participants and what can be observed in nature.
Experiential activities directly in the field
The workshops do not only include talking, participants are actively involved in individual tasks. During our previous events, children, for example, made casts of animal tracks, tried to measure the height of trees, created from natural materials and learned about life in the forest through games and practical demonstrations. The experiential form is one of the greatest advantages of forest pedagogy – participants associate new information with a specific place, object or their own experience.
The activity can be expanded to include a tour of the Marty the Squirrel Trail
The Marty the Squirrel Trail is located directly in Martinské hole. It starts at the Marty the Squirrel House by the Nová Ponorka restaurant and gradually leads towards slope no. 3, the Svah buffet, the upper station of the chairlift and then to the Rotunda. The trail is approximately 1 kilometer long, has an elevation gain of 180 meters and 10 educational stops. The individual points represent animals that we can meet in Malá and Veľká Fatra. The route can thus be a natural continuation of the workshop – what the participants learn about during the program with a forest educator, they will then repeat or expand on during the walk.
