Martinské hole may not be just a just a place for ticking off tourist miles. A weekend here may be much more peaceful, offering views of the Turiec Basin, walks along the ridge, the discovery of nature and history, and moments when you are in no hurry. If you stay right at the top of Martinské hole, your experience begins the moment you step outside. Krížava, Veľká lúka and other parts of Lúčanská Malá Fatra are all within easy reach, making the alpine landscape a natural part of your weekend.
Discover the region’s nature and chase the sunset to start your journey
Just before you set off for the mountains, you can drop by the Andrei Kmeť Museum in Martin. The exhibition dedicated to the nature of the Turiec region represents the local fauna and flora and also offers a broader view of the landscape that you will later encounter directly in the Lúčanská Malá Fatra terrain. An interesting feature of the museum is its various interactive elements, which are especially popular with children.
After arriving at Martinské hole, you do not have to go on a hike immediately, take just a short walk around the area, a first look at the Turiec Basin and enjoy a sunset on the ridge. It is one of those experiences that makes staying in the mountains after dark worthwhile. As the sky gradually changes color, Martin plunges into shadow and the first lights come on in the valley.
Across Krížava to Veľká lúka and further up the ridge
After breakfast, it is worth taking a trip across Krížava to Veľká lúka, the highest peak of Lúčanská Malá Fatra. The open mountain landscape offers far-reaching views of Malá and Veľká Fatra, the Turiec and Žilina valleys, and, with good visibility, also more distant mountains.
However, your hike doesn’t have to end in Veľká Lúka. You may continue up the ridge to Vidlica and onto Veterné. The open ridge is one of the main attractions of this route; a large part of the journey takes place in open mountain country with far-reaching views on both sides of the mountain. The Tatras, the Kremnické vrchy or the Beskydy Mountains are also visible under favorable conditions. Anyone wishing to extend the route may continue toward Humience. There’s no rush. Martinské hole are the ideal place to rest on the ridge, pull out your morning snack, and simply enjoy the horizon. Once back, you may try a different kind of experience – a cold plunge tub. Some will only dip their toes in, while others will take the plunge. In addition, a changing room is available, too.
Minčol combines views with war history
For tourists who prefer longer hikes, Minčol is a natural destination. The peak, with its distinctive metal double cross, offers stunning views and holds a powerful wartime history. During the Second World War, intense fighting took place around it, and the remains of trenches and other traces of these events are still visible on the slopes. Just a few meters below Minčol is Sedlo Okopy where a cannon exhibit commemorates the battles of the Slovak National Uprising.

However, Martinské hole are not just about long mountain hikes. For families with children or visitors looking for a simpler program, the Marta Squirrel Walk is ready. About a kilometer long, the route has ten stops dedicated to the animals of the Little and Great Fatra, offering an easy way to get to know the local nature without needing a full day. The historic SR-300 is a reminder of the skiing and engineering history of Martinské hole. It is worth dropping by to take a photograph while walking.
In a single weekend, you can combine a visit to the Martin Museum, a sunset over the Turiec Basin and a hike across the open ridges of Veľká Lúka, Vidlica, and Veterné. You can also climb Minčol, walk an educational nature trail, discover a piece of history and enjoy some cold water therapy. After all, the greatest experience may not be reaching any particular summit. Perhaps it will be that morning when you step out of your room, look down at Martin and realize that, this time, there is no hurry. This is what your ‘calmcation’ in Turiec may look like – a weekend where nature, views and peace are your main agenda.
